The Saxon Inn was build 1990 and is owned and operated by Alfred University. The board of trusties felt it was necessary to have a nice place for visitors to stay. Knubb associated were asked to construct the building along with Design and supply company. It took a few years to build, and was constructed of red brick.

It was originally built with twenty-six rooms but in 2009, one was turned into the mangers office. There are 2 meeting rooms and one breakfast/dining area. Of the 25 rooms, five are fireside Queen rooms, ideal for travelers who desire the comfort of a large room with a fireplace, one queen bed couch, leather chair and ottoman, desk, data port, refrigerator, coffee pot, hair dyer, iron with ironing board, large two sink bathroom with full shower. The twenty other rooms have two double beds, desk, data port, and a shower.

Each year they have fifty –five percent occupancy, which totals to six thousand seven hundred guests filling four thousand one hundred fifty rooms.

People who choose the Saxon Inn over other hotel/motel’s nearby are mostly Alfred University related guests, such as perspective students, parents and siblings of students, or others. Other guests include Alfred State, Corporate, State and Government and just social visits, like people on vacation.

When talking to the manager of the Saxon Inn, Kristen Karl, she had this to say, ”The quality of the Inn is exceptional, accounting for the high volume of repeat business. Customer service and attention to detail are our specialties. The Saxon Inn has earned a three-diamond rating by the AA, the highest rating without having a dining service on the site. The inn has a laundry facility on site to do cleaning of bed linen, towels and table linen, In addition to first class guest rooms the Inn has meeting space s to accommodate up to forty people, whether it is a small conference or a reception. Luncheons and dinners are catered in by AVI Food system.”

AVI? So parents and guests are forced to each the same gerbil food we are? When I asked why AVI, I got this answer. Fine Host Corporation and Manhattan West Restaurant once catered the Saxon Inn, but due to the recent economical crisis Alfred University has made some changes to compensate. So there you go, a fine classy joint on Campus that provides the luxury of Kings, and the food of everyone else on campus.

  1. AVI Fresh bothers me. Did you know they take up space in Rochester in the more than one block long Kodak building? I drove past it once, with steam coming out of my ears.
